Photographs of the diamond-encrusted jewellery stolen in a €98-million heist on a Cannes hotel have been published by the insurance company, in a bid to secure their return.
A huge heart-shaped diamond pendant, two diamond-encrusted rings and an Art Deco style emerald and diamond necklace were among the gems stolen on July 28 from the Carlton Hotel. The hotel was hosting an exhibition of diamonds belonging to Lev Leviev, a London-based Israeli-Russian billionaire, when it was targeted.
The thief walked into the hotel, in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon, and
stole a briefcase full of jewels.
Lloyds of London on Tuesday offered a €1 million reward for information that
led to the arrest of the thieves.
"We have to get the jewellery back first, evaluate the value of the
recovered jewellery and then, once the police is satisfied we're not about
to recompense the robbers, we can arrange the payment," said John Shaw,
managing director of SW Associates, a Paris-based loss adjuster and risk
manager working for Lloyd's of London.
In 2008, SW Associates offered a $1 million reward for information about a
$105 million jewel heist from the Harry Winston store in Paris. As a result
they recovered more than half the stolen pieces, thanks to a person coming
forward.
