The Wives and Girlfriends tag, used to describe either a legally married wife or casual girlfriend of a high-profile footballer, has entered popular usage following the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

All over the world, WAGS are hugely popular, with some feeding off the same the fame of their husbands and boyfriends, while others were themselves famous prior to dating their hunks. Take a look some of Africa’s high-flying WAGS.
 

Menaye Donkor – Wife of Ghana’s Sulley Muntari

Model, entrepreneur and philanthropist, she is the better half of AC Milan and Ghanaian footballer Sulley Ali Muntari.
Legally married for years now, they make a beautiful union, and they are considered the perfect celebrity couple by fans in Ghana and Italy.
In the streets of Milan, they gladly engage in public display of affection, the way celebrity couples do. They are such a tight item; they seldom attract negative press.

 

Abigail Barwuah – Girlfriend of Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins

Sister of AC Milan and Italian player of Ghanaian descent Mario Balottelli, she models for some of Italy’s top fashion brands.
Her relationship with the Nigerian hitman has yielded some fruits as they welcomed their first baby this year.
Both seem to be in love, however, Martins has two children with former girlfriends.

Georgette Fils – Wife of Cameroon’s Samuel Eto Fils

Reserved, intelligent, and in some instances referred to as the strong force behind her husband’s successes at club and international level, Mrs Eto, makes the WAG tag somewhat nice.
While she is not as visible at parties and shops as many other WAGs, she however doesn’t fall short of letting the world know how much of a serious couple they are when in public.
Full of grace, and style, she forms a good union with the Chelsea star.
The pair have been married for years, and appear from the outside to still be going strong. A union that became legal in July 2007, they have two children Siena and Lynn.
