17-Year-Old Nigerian Student Kills Herself After Being Caught Cheating

A 17-year-old high school senior plunged into the Hudson River after being caught cheating on an exam.

Omotayo Adeoye, a junior at Harlem’s High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, was caught by her teacher looking at her cell phone during a German test. The teacher confronted her and Adeoye ran to the bathroom completely mortified. Unfortunately, the teenager decided not to return to her classroom and instead went to the Hudson River.

Witnesses say that Adeoye put her belongings on a rock, walked into the water, and did not make her way back up above the surface. The bystanders reportedly pleaded with her not to go into the water, but she did not listen.

“I said, ‘Come here, come here, don’t go to the water,’” said 71-year-old fisherman Fabio Martinez, witness to the suicide. “She was just crying, crying all the time.”

Authorities say that right after being caught cheating, Adeoye wrote on her exam, “I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the river.”

Now, police are searching for Adeoye’s body. Unfortunately, their search has so far come up empty.

The Department of Education has launched an investigation into the incident, and the school’s chancellor says that she hopes they can learn from this tragic situation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her school community,” said chancellor Carmen Farina. “This must be a call to action.”

The teacher who caught Adeoye cheating, Eva Malikova, has yet to comment on the incident.
