White House Lit Up with Rainbow After Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

The White House joined in the nationwide celebration of the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday to legalize gay marriage across all 50 states with a rainbow light show.

The north side of the executive mansion was lit up with the rainbow – a symbol of gay pride – after dusk to commemorate the landmark decision that any law prohibiting same-sex unions violates the Constitution.

"Tonight, the White House was lit to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to progress and equality, here in America and around the world," a White House official said. "The pride colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and tonight, these colors celebrate a new chapter in the history of American civil rights."

Earlier on Friday, President Obama called Jim Obergefell, a plaintiff in the Supreme Court case, and told him that his leadership on the issue had "changed the country." Obama also sent out a statement via the White House Twitter feed saying, "What an extraordinary achievement. What a vindication of the belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things," along with the hasthtag #LoveWins.

The Empire State Building and Freedom Tower in New York City were also lit up with rainbows in celebration on Friday night.
