I’ve never been the kind of person who buys into conspiracies, but there’s one particular theory I believe in wholeheartedly: There’s a secret organization with the sole purpose of coming up with some ridiculous hashtag every few months to see what people are willing to do for attention.
It began last summer with the now infamous #IceBucketChallenge, a hashtag at least existing to raise awareness for a good cause, and continued with the #KylieJennerChallenge, a hashtag really only existing to raise awareness for the gullibility and shortsightedness of people around the world.
By now, most of those swollen lips have (hopefully) returned to their original sizes, meaning it was time for the secret hashtag organization to come up with its latest social experiment: the #BellyButtonChallenge.
The concept, originating in China, is as simple as it is stupid. You put your hand behind your back and try to touch your belly button.
Then, you take a picture. That’s literally the entire thing.
According to the masterminds behind the trend, being able to touch it means you’re in shape and struggling to reach it means you’re fatter than all of the mommas mentioned on the MTV show Wilmer Valderrama used to host.
I don’t think it’s supported by actual science, but based on most Facebook comments concerning global warming, the Internet isn’t really interested in actual facts when made-up ones are more convenient.
The challenge is very popular with Chinese celebrities I’ve never heard of and skinny people who want excuses to show off.
