A woman who decided not to wear a tampon while running the London Marathon on her period has been branded 'disgusting' and unhygienic'.
Kiran Gandhi, 26, let her period flow freely during the 26-mile race in a bid to raise awareness about people who have no access to feminine products.
After sharing the story on her blog in the aftermath of the race, the former M.I.A drummer's actions have since gone viral and sparked a huge debate around the issue with thousands of people commenting on social media.
@Briadoublene said: "FYI @MadameGandhi, running around bleeding doesn't raise awareness for anything. It just makes you look disgusting."
@Sugarchic189 said: "What a disgusting way to spread awareness! Why couldn't you raise funds to send tampons or pads to places that lacked access!"
Stacey Alrdidge added: "It's not empowering. It's simply unpleasant. Sad woman."
But Kiran has been backed by thousands on social media, including high-profile women such as Karen Danczuk.
Danczuk tweeted: "Absolute hats off to you for raising awareness the way you have for such an important issue."
Journalist and commentator Caitlin Moran, added: "AWESOME - M.I.A's drummer runs a marathon during her period, without a tampon. Punk rock."
Supraneeti Hammacott said: "@MadameGandhi Is the heroine who's shown a finger to pop culture. What grosses you out about issues of female health?
Jessica Pittochi said: "The amount of people commenting that they find this story 'gross' makes me sad."Megan Elanor Clark said: "What you did deserves to go in the books. You're an inspiration."
@anderson said: "It is not a feministic act to don't wear tampons, it is just disgusting and unsanitary."
In her blog post, Kiran urged women to embrace that time of the month, rather than hide away in shame.
And after the race, she proudly posed for photographs with family and friends wearing her blood-stained running trousers.
Kiran wrote on her website, with the heading 'Sisterhood, blood and boobs': "I ran the whole marathon with my period blood running down my legs.
"I ran with blood dripping down my legs for sisters who don't have access to tampons and sisters who, despite cramping and pain, hide it away and pretend like it doesn't exist."
Are we supposed to walk arounddripping with blood and crying in pain? Mscheew! Disgusting !
