In what is the biggest penalty leveled against an organisation in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has fined MTN Nigeria a record N1.4 trillion for breach of SIM registration rules.According to NCC, MTN has been undermining efforts by the Nigerian government to tackle security challenges and the war on terror as well as allied crimes, following its alleged refusal to comply with a directive to deactivate unregistered mobile phone lines on its network.
MTN said it has received a letter from NCC on the fine. The Spokesperson for MTN Funso Aina, however, said the company will release a statement on the fine later in the day.
In a statement released by MTN’s spokesperson, Funso Aina, the company revealed that it was fined for “the timing of the disconnection of the 5.1 million MTN subscribers that were disconnected in August & September 2015”
It said it was fined “N200,000 for each improperly registered subscriber.
“MTN Nigeria is currently engaging with the NCC to resolve the matter,” the statement reads.
