Could the Next Pope Be Black And Anti-Christ?
Onaiyekan
Arinze
Turkson
Vatican and papal observers are already agog with speculations regarding who will be the next pope and head the first religion in the world. The Catholic Church is at the brink of change, liberals are agitating for a greater voice to women and reconsider rules on priestly celibacy, women priests and same-sex couples.Benedict, who, like his predecessor John Paul, firmly opposed the ordination of women priests and described gay marriage as a threat to humanity's future, said on Monday he would resign at the end of February, announcing the first papal abdication in 700 years.
Francis Arinze of Nigeria, Peter Turkson of Ghana and Marc Ouellet of Canada were among the cardinals hotly tipped by bookmakers on Monday to take over from Pope Benedict XVI.
Its common belief or myth that the next pope will be the Anti-Christ and will crumble and destroy the Church.
Three likely black candidates that can make pope are:Cardinal Arinze and Cardinal Onaiyekan, the latter was recently made a Cardinal of the Church. Many people believe that John Onaiyekan should have been elevated to the position of a Cardinal in the Catholic Church about a decade ago.One of those who thought that Onaiyekan deserved the Cardinal’s hat long before he secured it is Anthony Cardinal Okogie, the Archbishop-emeritus of Lagos.Okogie said: “I must confess to you: when I was made a Cardinal, I didn’t expect it. Nearly everyone in the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria ....nearly everyone in that our Conference thought that Cardinal Onaiyekan was the right candidate for that post.”
During the 2005 conclave of the Vatican’s College of Cardinals that elected Benedict, Arinze was considered “papabile,” or a potential successor to the late John Paul II.“When we opened betting last time around, in 2005, Francis Arinze was our favourite,” a William Hill spokesman said.
“His odds did drift towards the date of the announcement when Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI) became the favourite, but he remained in the top three.
“Also, when Ratzinger became pope, Arinze took over from him as cardinal bishop of Velletri-Segni (a Catholic diocese close to Rome) — it could be that he’ll follow in his footsteps again.”
It looks like Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana, the first Cardinal in Ghana, is now firmly in this group known as the papabili, or possible popes, thanks to an important job he’s doing this month. He’s the relator,
or secretary general, of the Synod for Africa, a major meeting of
African bishops in Rome to discuss the Church’s future on that
continent. Previous cardinals who served in such posts include the
future popes John Paul II and Benedict.
Is someone suggesting that it is the black pope that will be the anti-Christ?...I find that silly and tasteless.
ReplyDeleteThe next pope black?? I will be really surprised if that happens! They may decide to opt from someone from latin America instead as a way of assuaging the feelings of the teeming population of catholics from that part of the globe and also considering the fact that Europe will naturally prefer a hispanic pope to a black african. I sincerely do not think the vatican is ready to elect a black pope but i will very much love to be proved wrong on that count.!
ReplyDeleteAs for a black pope being the anti-christ,i will say thats totally out of my jurisdiction!
ReplyDeleteBlack pope being the anti-Christ is crazy!its when a black wants to take a position of power like Obama, negative stories will emerge!
ReplyDeleteObama is said to be the anti-Christ too,how many will they be abeg?
ReplyDeleteThere may be some truth in it,grew up being told that when a black man becomes Pope then wahala dey for the church ooo!
ReplyDeleteA discussion regarding the AntiChrist is outside the scope of this blog. However if and will the next pope be black? The odds are 2 out of 3, very high and plausible and I really look forward to that day.
ReplyDeleteThe day of the "white smoke" is almost upon us..let's chill..
