Is Facebook about to launch its own phone?
Facebook could be about to launch its own smartphone, it has emerged.
The social networking company sent out invitations yesterday to a press event which promises to show off the firm's 'new home on Android.'
Sources close to the project say Facebook will show off its own version of the Android operating system.
It is believed that Facebook is working with HTC to design a smartphone, it will be sold 'as a lifestyle brand, not specifically for its hardware or software'.
It is not the first time that HTC and Facebook have worked together to develop a smartphone.
In 2011, HTC attempted something similar with a phone which had a dedicated Facebook button. However, it did not work out.
But it is not being reported that the planned new phone will include 'a deeper, forked version of Android rather than a Facebook-ified version of Sense.'
If Facebook does have its own version of the Android operating system, it would be similar to the way Amazon modified Android for the Kindle Fire tablets.
A senior exec from Google recently moved to facebook, however I sincerely doubt if a Facebook phone will be a very big buzz.
