Sympathy Sex

He plays patient possum in the dark

As she stealthy glides in like a light breeze in the park

Tepidly hops into bed offering a defiant arched back

Hands reach out, recoil as she retreats

Her back aches, she whispers in deceit

She nudges away his ravenous hands

The dense air in his enraged tumescence decants  

Whistling like a suppressed sigh through his clenched teeth

Defeated once again, he gently tucks her in

Stroking her cheek, frustration masked by a sheepish grin

They both pretend to drift off to sleep

For whatever he did, to make her vex

He will rather get none than have sympathy sex

I'll be doubly damned if I sleep with him tonight

I guess I am better off turning on the light

Almost cursed when I found him still up in bed

For each time I go through this I see red

Willing him to sleep with all my might

I hope this wouldn’t be another long and tortuous night

Yet I can't imagine being with anyone else

For we were in love, a fairytale romance

Post four kids and 12 years its such a chore

Not that I don’t love him anymore

And then with the pressures of the long day’s work

I just don't want to give up anymore

Hmmnnn! To think that we used to do this every day

Had more than our fair share of rolls in the hay

He sleeps fitfully, lost in a bacchanalian dream

Blood running hot, ardent in his minds reel

Sheets wet and aglow with the heat of pleasure

Again and again finding orgiastic treasure

The immanent lust now a receding glow

The earlier rejection an afterglow

Satiated, his face lights up in a sheepish grin

For one day he may yet live out this dream
