Kidnappers in Bayelsa State have asked N50 million as ransom for the release of Okali Powel, a six-year old boy.
Okali, the son of Godknows Powell, a former Commissioner for Local Government in Bayelsa was abducted by gunmen on New Year’s Day in Etegwe, a suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital.
Family sources that the boy was in the company of his mother and on the way back from a church service when the kidnappers accosted them and whisked him away. The abductors subsequently contacted the family and warned against involving security agents in their negotiations.
Godknows Powell served as commissioner in the administration of Timipre Sylva. He was also the Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government council during the tenure of Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as governor.
Okali’s kidnap is a reminder of the growing insecurity in Bayelsa following the inability of Governor Seriake Dickson, an ex-policeman, to police Bayelsa.
Insecurity in Bayelsa, the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan, continues to worsen by the day, with scores of kidnappings now unresolved.
