British Airways flight makes emergency landing at Heathrow

British Airways jet in emergency landing as fire crew follow it on tarmac

Flight BA343 was on its way from Nice to Heathrow when it reported problems with the landing gear

A British Airways passenger jet was followed by fire engines after it made an emergency landing at Heathrow this afternoon.
Flight BA343 was flying at around 34,000ft from Nice to London when it issued an emergency call.
The call, which is thought to have been about a faulty landing gear, was made as the plane reached the English Channel.
Air traffic controllers in London supported the flight as it made its way towards the capital, but crew on board the flight called for the fire crew to be on hand when they came to land the plane.
After reaching UK airspace at around 1pm, the plane was told to circle above London for almost 20 minutes as teams on the ground worked out the best spot for the plane.
When give the green light to land, the plane took a slow journey to the ground - with a number of commentators remarking how long it was taking.
Posting on twitter, MattJF said: "BA343 looks to be making as slow an approach as possible to LHR."
It is thought the slow approach was due to concerns over the landing gear.
Despite these concerns, the plane landed safely at around 1.45pm this afternoon with emergency crews ready and waiting.
Once on the ground, the plane was looked over by emergency crew, before it taxied to the gate.
A British Airways spokeswoman said: "Our flight has landed safely after a suspected technical issue.
"The safety of our customers and crew is always our first priority and the aircraft will be checked by our engineers before returning to service."
