Kentucky Clerk Jailed for Refusing to Issue Gay Marriage Licenses

A Republican federal judge in Kentucky jailed a Rowan County clerk who refused to issue a marriage license to gay couples.
Kim Davis, 50, was jailed on Thursday for contempt of court by a federal judge who said he didn’t believe Davis would comply with his order if she was fined.
Davis told the judge that her supporters were raising funds for her.

“The court cannot condone the willful disobedience of its lawfully issued order,” Judge Bunning said. “If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that’s what potentially causes problems.”
Though many Christians support Davis’ position, the reality is she had no legal leg to stand on because gay marriage is now the law of the land.
In a hearing on Thursday, the judge gave Davis a second chance to remain free if she would comply with his order to issue gay marriage licenses. But Davis refused again, saying she would only allow her deputy clerks to issue gay marriage licenses if her name were not on them.
Davis was taken into custody after the hearing. She appeared somber and unwavering in her official jail mugshot.
In a statement released on Tuesday, she said:

“I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. It is a heaven or hell decision.”

GoFundMe, which is run by liberals, has changed its policy to prevent donations for people or organizations who oppose gay marriage.
Davis is an elected official who can only be removed from office by impeachment. The governor does not have the authority to remove her from office by executive order.
The mother-of-2 has been married 3 times — twice to her current husband.
